Although
there is a sizable permanent population of Stomgrog, there is also a high
turnover of inhabitants who, used to a lifetime on "solid" ground
can not become accustomed to the islands unique characteristics. However,
many newcomers soon find they have fallen in love the island and regard
its idiosyncracies as part of its unique charm. Statistically, those who
remain on the island for two years will probably live there for the rest
of their lives.
Stomgrogians are fiercely proud of their island. Since 1952 there have been
376 births and the population fluctuates from a few thousand in winter to
almost triple that with the summer traffic. The island is fairly self sufficient
for food. Sheep and pig farming form most of the livestock production. The
main industries on the island are fishing, and laterly tourism.
