The Warp

Canning Machine

Sometimes the canning machine came to pay us a visit in the Parish Hall.

The canner itself was a very small apparatus and arrived first, then came quantities of boxes full of cans, then various assistants, and finally the canning operator herself arrived.

For the rest of the day there was the hiss of boiling water and fitful conversation as canning took place throughout the hall. From every cranny in roof, window or door the steam poured out. Often, the cooling system overflowed so that water coursed across the floor and out of the door. Inside, the atmosphere was thick and murky, like soup or a morning mist but warm not cold.
